Big updates this week

New versions of products, languages and models people already use, by Hacker News points. The candidates are the week's stories with 300 points or more.

  1. 1716Mistral Large 4 HN threadMistral released the weights of Mistral Large 4, a 1-trillion-parameter model. The license is a modified MIT license. Only companies that sell the model as a service need a separate commercial license from Mistral.Teams that run their own GPU servers can fine-tune Mistral Large 4 and build it into their products without Mistral’s API.
  2. 1354Ghostty 1.4 HN threadThe terminal app Ghostty 1.4 compresses scrollback that is off screen and raises the default scrollback limit from 10 MB to 50 MB. A new ghostty +ssh command installs terminfo, the file that describes the terminal’s features, on the remote host and then connects.Ghostty users who SSH into many servers no longer have to install its terminfo file on each one by hand.
  3. 1044Genie 4 HN threadGoogle DeepMind announced Genie 4, a world model. Genie 4 generates a scene from a prompt in real time. It keeps generating the scene as the user moves with the keyboard or adds prompts. This version also generates ambient sound and spoken dialogue.Developers who build game prototypes or robot training environments must be Gemini API early access partners to use Genie 4.
  4. 1016Gemini 4 Carbon HN threadGoogle announced Gemini 4 Carbon, the model after Gemini 4 Argon. Google says it scored highest on benchmarks for finding and patching vulnerabilities. The introductory price is $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens.Developers get Gemini 4 Carbon only after Google opens it to some security teams and trusted partners. After the introductory period, the token prices double.
  5. 637GPT-6.1 Terra HN threadOpenAI announced GPT-6.1 Terra. A Hacker News comment quoting the announcement says it scored 15 percentage points higher than GPT-5.6 Terra on a computer-use evaluation at the medium reasoning setting.Developers who run computer-use agents through the API can use GPT-6.1 Terra at half the token price of GPT-6.1 Sol, the higher tier.

I did not run an update this week.
